- Abstract
An increase in milk production of dairy cattle, notably Holstein-Friesian (HF), has been co-occurred with an increase in diseases and decreases in reproductive performance, herd life and animal welfare. One of the factors having effect on profitability in dairy cattle production is the herd life (HL). In this study, the first insemination age (FIA), the first calving age (FCA), HL and productive life (PL) of 26 heads HF, 47 heads Red-Holstein (RH) and 115 heads Simmental (SIM) reared together and culled from the herd were emphasized. For HF, RH and SIM breeds FIA means were 499.90±10.45, 510.33±8.71 and 533.86±5.36 days (P<0.05), FCA means were 817.31±25.14, 842.41±21.04 and 872.76±12.75 days, HL means were 1674.88±133.89, 1614.16±133.56 and 1634.93±110.54 days and PL means were 871.38±120.05, 773.84±120.65 and 740.49±99.11 days, respectively. In HL, the first culling reason of the animals was selling (32.45%) and the second reason was the reproductive failure (30.32%). In PL, on the other hand, the first reason was reproductive failure (38.41%) and the second was selling (14.49%), the third reason was the metabolic failure (7.5%). As the differences among the breeds for HL and PL were not found to be statistically significant, the reasons of culling among the breeds were different and in terms of HL and PL, reproduction failure become the prominent problems in all three breeds.
