- Abstract
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is a mental disorder in which a caregiver, usually a mother, falsifies illness in a child to gain the attention of medical personnel. It is also considered a form of medical child abuse as medical personnel can unknowingly play a role in the abuse through procedures and treatments conducted in the name of treating the feigned illness. This paper explores the incidence of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, its etiology, the symptoms observed in child victims and perpetrators, including pregnant women, new mothers, and fathers, assessment and diagnosis of the illness, and the recommended methods of treatment. The implications that the information presented has for childbirth educators is also explored.
