The article provides a summary of four books related to Kansas history. "Gathering Strays" by Jim Hoy is a collection of short stories about nineteenth-century Kansas cattle towns and cowboys in various countries. "The Plea" by Patricia L. Bryan and Thomas Wolf follows the life of Wesley Elkins, an Iowa boy convicted of murdering his parents, and explores Progressive Era prison reform and changes in child psychology theory. "Sand Creek and the Tragic End of a Lifeway" by Louis Kraft examines the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864 and its impact on the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. "Mud, Blood, and Ghosts" by Julie Carr tells the story of Omer Madison Kem, a Populist politician in Nebraska, and explores the history and character of the United States during that period.
