- Abstract
Archippos is one of the few comic poets of the 'last generation' of Old Comedy about whom we can say anything definitive. The first matter considered in this paper is that, while the Suda assigns him a victory ca. 415, the fragments and titles suggest rather a poet active at the very end of the century and into the fourth. Next examined is Archippos' relationship with Aristophanes, particularly the statement in the Life of Aristophanes that some ancient sources attributed four of Aristophanes' plays to Archippos. Thirdly there is Fishes, the one comedy about which we know anything at all; parallels with Birds are examined and the implications from the testimonia and fragments teased out. Finally there is the question of whether the papyrus discovery known as the Comoedia Dukiana ( PCG VIII.146) should be assigned to Fishes.
