- Title
Re-making History and Cultural Identity: From The Return of Martin Guerre to Sommersby.
- Authors
Humbert, Brigitte E.
- Abstract
The article examines the preservation of history and cultural identity in the French film "The Return of Martin Guerre," directed by Daniel Vigne and its U.S. remake "Sommersby," directed by Jon Amiel. According to the author, in the case of Martin Guerre/Sommersby, the French source film and the U.S. remake each reflect a certain national identity shaped by the era the film portrays, as well as by the period in which it was made. Both films use existing memories and generate new ones, and play a key role in the construction of cultural and national identity.
