- Title
Antonioni and Benjamin: Dialectical Imagery in Eclipse.
- Authors
Esposito, Joan
- Abstract
The article discusses the similarity between literary critic Walter Benjamin's theory of dialectical images in his "Theses on the Philosophy of History" and director Michelangelo Antonioni's vision in his film "Eclipse." The use of landscape is seen as the most obvious point of reconciliation between Benjamin and Antonioni, in which the film's setting is in suburban area of Rome. The finale of "Eclipse" is considered as a dialectical image of present time, and an intensification of the entire film which rejects the automatic processes of traditional dramatic narrative.
