- Abstract
In the process of reinterpreting the German Enlightenment (Aufklärung) after the French Revolution, efforts to make sense of the concept of Bildung handled education and training in a way that they complement each other and led to the emergence of thinkers who brought up the relationship between them. Among these thinkers, Johann Friedrich Herbart, the successor of Immanuel Kant from Königsberg University, has made progress towards establishing Bildung concept expansion in education on scientific foundations. Herbart tried to find a solution to the problem of freedom in education, to what extent the child should be restricted, how she/he can make her/his own choices, and what kind of social interaction she/he should be in. In this article, Herbart's life story was discussed in the context of his intellectual climate development, some critical points of his opinions were pointed out within the scope of the mentioned problems and his position in the history of education was mentioned. By comparing his views with liberal education and with some thinkers that he interacted intellectually, his ideas in the field of freedom in education were revealed. With the evaluations made in this context, it can be concluded that Herbart's pedagogy is a source of egalitarian educational formations aiming to raise the child as a free individual. The document analysis method was used in this qualitative study.
