- Abstract
One hundred years of existence of the University of Ljubljana is not only an impressive anniversary but also an opportunity to make an overview of its successful operations over one century. At the same time, it is an opportunity to shed some light on different areas at the University, one of which is university sport. The records show a number of milestones in the development of this area. In a sequence of events from distant 1963, when the first physical education class took place at the then University of Ljubljana, until the present day, there have been ups and downs in development. The Principal Department was actively involved in the work and management of university sport and, later on, this role was assumed by the University Sports Department. Following the initial growth and the introduction of physical education into faculties over the years as well as the increasing number of participating students in the next period, fundamental changes occurred with the enforcement of the Bologna reform. Extracurricular sports activities started gaining ground and were expected to yield better results. Yet they have failed to do so. The reintroduction of regular sports activities into the study programmes of individual faculties, which brings better and more long-term results from the perspective of the sports profession and science, is a demanding and time-consuming process. The conditional factors for promoting sport at the University also include systematic research, better determinability and achievement of excellence. Lecturers and sports teachers bear their share of responsibility in this as well.
