- Abstract
The article presents the results of a pedagogical experiment involving handball players aged between 9 and 12. The study aimed to establish whether a man-to-man or a zone defence is a more suitable type of defence in mini handball. The sample consisted of 72 handball players aged between 9 and 12. Based on professional guidelines and recommendations in the literature, we assumed that a man-to-man defence was more suitable. The children played five mini-handball matches using a man-to-man defence and five using a zone defence. All matches were video-recorded. Eleven playing parameters, which were considered to embody the characteristics of play, were defined. The SPSS software package was used for statistical data processing. The basic statistical characteristics of the observed variables were calculated and, using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, differences in the occurrence of each individual variable in both types of defence were established. The results show that, according to the applied methodology, it is difficult to unequivocally confirm the advantages of using a man-to-man defence in mini handball compared to using a zone defence. However, some data indicate that play in mini handball where a man-to-man defence is employed is more dynamic and offers children more creative possibilities.
