- Abstract
Sr 2 IrO 4 hosts a J eff =1/2 Mott insulating state with antiferromagnetic ordering. It has been predicted that proper doping in Sr 2 IrO 4 could lead to possible high-temperature superconductivity. We present a systematic study on the lattice structure and the magnetic and transport properties of a series of Nb-doped Sr 2 IrO 4 samples. The incorporation of Nb leads to an increase of a-axis lattice constant and a decrease of c-axis lattice constant. A detailed structural refinement suggests that the in-plane Ir-O-Ir bond is significantly straightened with increasing Nb doping content. An unexpected robust insulating state has been found in all Nb-doped samples. The present results suggest that the tilted Ir-O-Ir bond angle alone does not explain its transport behavior in doped Sr 2 IrO 4 compound. The lack of sufficient amount of itinerant charge carriers could be responsible for the robust insulating behavior in Sr 2 - x Nb x IrO 4 samples.
