- Authors
Mann, Michael
- Abstract
The article deals with the everyday life of soldiers in the 18th century. It is pointed out that soldiers often had conflicts with organized guilds and that married soldiers and their wives played an important role in the economic life of a garrison town. It is argued that soldiers and their families were an integral part of urban society and that soldiers were also consumers. The reputation of soldiers and the perception of their role in society are also discussed. Military history research has drawn a more differentiated picture of soldier life and emphasized the importance of soldier families for urban society. It is emphasized that further research towards a social and everyday history of the military in the 18th century is necessary to better understand the society of that time.
