- Abstract
The article discusses the 1645-1699 battle for the Mediterranean island of Heraklion with a focus on the role of "Father Ottomano", an alleged son of Turkish sultan Ibrahim I. Information is offered on Ottomano's 1644 capture and imprisonment by the Knights of Malta, the exploitation of his capture to defend Venetian-occupied Heraklion against attacking Osman forces, and Ottomano's postwar career as a Dominican friar in the Counterreformation.
