- Abstract
The article examines French naval hydrographer Charles-Dominique-Maurice Rollet de l'Isle's impressions of Hong Kong, China during the Sino-French War. The author first describes the deterioration in foreign relations between France and China which led to the conflict. He goes on to describe both land-based and naval operations during the war, as well as boatmen strikes in Hong Kong. The author also presents various entries of Rollet de l'Isle's journal translated into English, which largely focus on British commerce and unrest in Hong Kong.
