- Abstract
Dainius RAZAUSKAS presents Vytautas Ališauskas' book Jonas Lasicki's account of the Samogitian gods: Texts and contexts. This is a new edition of the 16th century source on Lithuanian religion and mythology, Jan Łasicki's book De dii samagitarum…, with a translation into the Lithuanian language, and a very apt and quintessential historical and mythological analysis of it. First, the technical side of the book should be considered as noteworthy: the original facsimile is presented, a Latin transcription with numbered lines juxtaposed to the Lithuanian translation, and at the end of the book - a subject index. So, using the book is most convenient. In the introductory analytical article, the source's author and his work is thoroughly and substantially rehabilitated, although before, especially by early 20th century positivists, they were greatly diminished and vilified. Moreover, V. Alisauskas provides quite exciting mythological interpretations of the presented book, and significant methodological comments on religious studies. At the end of the review is mentioned the recently announced significant work of V. Alisauskas - the article "The gods under Lithuania's sky. The year 1619…" (Naujasis židinys, 2012, no. 2. 95-102). This article presents and discusses a new, still completely unknown source of Lithuanian religion and mythology.
