- Abstract
This article, published in the Veterinary Record, examines the haematological and biochemical abnormalities in the blood of 1022 dogs. The study compares the frequency and associations of these abnormalities in dogs of different age groups. The findings show that younger dogs had lower levels of erythrocytes and haemoglobin, higher levels of lymphocytes and inorganic phosphorus, and elevated alkaline phosphatase activity. Neutrophilia, hypergammaglobulinaemia, and hypoalbuminaemia were common in all dogs, while hypoalbuminaemia and hyperphosphataemia were common in uraemic animals. The study also suggests that measuring both cytolytic and hepatobiliary enzymes can more accurately detect liver damage in dogs.
