- Abstract
The article discusses the Fifth Air Force of the U.S. Army Air Force's aerial campaign against the Japanese at Rabaul, Papua New Guinea during World War II. Particular focus is given to the U.S. Army Air Force's use of the fighter plane the P-38 Lightning against the Japanese navy's Zeros fighter planes. The U.S. Army Air Force's use of the B-24 and B-25 bombers in the Rabaul campaign is discussed. An overview of the U.S. Commander of the Allied Air Force General George C. Kenney's role in the Rabaul campaign is provided.
