The article talks about the unsustainability of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for adults model as the number of medically complex children reaching adulthood continues to grow. Topics covered include the lack of adult intensive care unit (ICU) systems and processes for medically complex children who are living into adulthood, the special care requirements of chronically ill children and how PICU nurses can help address them, and ways of providing quality care to these patients.
