- Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine the parent-child relationship quality in relation to the child's compulsive internet use (CIU) symptoms at two measurement times, one year apart. The study was carried out within the framework of the research project "School - aged Children's internet Use in Relation to Socioemotional Development and Parenting Practices in Latvia, Lithuania and Taiwan: A Longitudinal Study". The study involved 263 second and third grade pupils, aged 8 to 10 years (mean age of 8.6 years), and one of the child's parents. Parents and children completed the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIU; Meerkerk, van den Eijnden, Vermulst, & Garresten, 2009); parents also completed items from the Block's Child Rearing Practices Report (Block, 1981). For purposes of this study an additional questionniare item for children was developed about how they value their relationship with their parents. The results of the study showed a positive correlation between parent report and the child's self-report on his or her compulsive internet use habits, as well as a positive correlation between parents' self-report of emotionally warm parenting practices and the quality of the child-parent relationship from the child's point of view. The child's assessment of the childparent relationship at Time 1 predicted the child's CIU symptoms at Time 2, indicating that the child's assessment of emotionally warm relationships with parents is a protective factor against CIU symptoms. The results of the study imply that the more the child feels emotional warmth expressed by parents and his or her importance in the family, the less likelihood of developing CIU.
