- Title
Points of Significance: Error bars.
- Authors
Krzywinski, Martin; Altman, Naomi
- Abstract
The authors discuss how uncertainty is represented in scientific publications and the ways in which it is misinterpreted. They calculate the significance of the difference in the sample means using the t-test. According to them, one should be clear about which measure of uncertainty is being represented by the error bar to avoid misinterpretation. Also discussed are several bases of error bars including standard deviation, standard error of the mean and confidence interval.
