- Title
Pacing lightly: optogenetics gets to the heart.
- Authors
Knollmann, Björn C.
- Abstract
The article discusses the research done by scientist T. Bruegmann and colleagues demonstrating how in transgenic mice, the heart can be controlled optically by the expression of light-sensitive ion channels in heart muscle cells. It mentions the drawbacks of the use of electrical stimulation approach to study heart muscle cells in vitro. It discusses the optogenetic approach applied by Bruegmann that was based on a light-activated cation channel from green algae, channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2).
