- Abstract
The article discusses the opportunities and challenges of vitrification of intermediate level radioactive wastes. It explores how vitrified intermediate level wastes (ILW) wasteforms comply with the features of passive safety by fixing radionuclides inside a durable, solid matrix, while eliminating the reactivity associated with metallic and organic wastes. It concludes that vitrification paves a way for ILW's immobolisation with high waste loadings and massive volume reductions.
