- Abstract
This article discusses the need for a life cycle approach to classifying the toxicity of refrigerants. Refrigeration and air conditioning systems contribute to a significant amount of electricity consumption and have environmental impacts due to emissions. The American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air‐Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) currently classifies refrigerants based on their flammability and toxicity. However, this classification only considers the parent compound and not the precursors or degradation products. The article suggests that a life cycle assessment (LCA) framework should be used to analyze the environmental and human health impacts of refrigerants throughout their production, usage, and disposal. The LCA approach can help identify overlooked impacts and inform the development of strategies to address the environmental footprint of refrigerants.
