Abstract

The article profiles Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson, composer, teacher, pianist and radio commentator who together with Canadian flutist Robert Aitken and Australian flute player Manuela Wiesler are considered important figures in Icelandic musical life, flute playing and avant-garde techniques. Topics discussed include the story behind the piece "Kalais" that was composed in 1976, Sigurbjörnsson's technique in playing the flute and the incorporation of mythology in their works.
