The Religious Gift: Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain Perspectives on Dana.
- Authors
Eck, Diana L.
- Abstract
The article examines the concept of dana, or a religious gift, within the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions of India. Particular focus is given to the roles of renunciation and anonymity in the practice of dana. The author emphasizes the differences between dana, in which there is no expectation of return, and reciprocal models of giving such as those theorized by anthropologist Marcel Mauss. Details on attitudes towards wealth within the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions are presented. Other topics include asceticism, the Hindu concept of dharma, generosity, and the teachings of activist and ascetic Mohandas K. Gandhi.
