- Title
Flax fiber production in Lithuania.
- Abstract
At the beginning of the 20th century the area of flax growth in Lithuania was between 50,000-90,000 hectares. As of October 2003, the area sown with flax is only 10%, but during recent year it has been more stable (8,600-9,600 hectares). The government supports flax growers, but the subsidies are decreasing. Nine scutching enterprises are producing flay fiber and shives using dew-retted straw. From 1999-2000, some of them upgraded their processing lines by Depoortere equipment. Flax fiber is hackled and sliver prepared in 3 textile enterprises as well as in the Joint-Stock Company Ltd. LINOLITAS, capacity of which could be as much as 4,000 tons of long fiber/year. In 2001, Italian company UAB Liet Linen with an annual capacity of 3,300 tons of long fiber, started operation in Lithuania.
