- Abstract
Introduction: low birth weight is an important predictor of early neonatal mortality, morbidity, and long-term health. The objective of this article is to identify the maternal socio-demographic and obstetric risk factors associated with the birth weight of newborns in the region of Marrakech (Morocco). Methods: a transversal study was performed. The information on parturient and their children born from July 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019 was collected by interview and completed by exploitation of birth records, at the level of the delivery services of the Ibn Zohr hospital and the hospital. Mother and child, Mohammed VI University Hospital and at the level of three health centers with Delivery Module (Loudaya, Massera and Syba) in Marrakech. We made a sample of 1041 newborns (231 cases (less than 2500grams) and 810 controls (2500-6000grams)). Univariate and multivariate analysis was done using binary logistic regression to identify factors associated with low birth weight. Results: the prevalence of low birth weight was estimated at 22%. It was found, in the bivariate and multivariate analysis, that the mother's level of education, residence, high physical activity and lack of medical coverage, pregnancy follow-up, progression of pregnancy with risks, and gestational age are variables significantly associated with low birth weight. Conclusion: from these results we suggest the promotion of providing empirical data for clinical and public health interventions aimed at reducing low birth weight and its associated complications.
