- Abstract
In the book "The Curse of the Empire" by Bruno Schönfelder, the question is raised of what holds the post-communist Russian Federation together under Putin and why a democratization based on Western European models has not taken place. The author argues that Russia's settlement structure, economic geography, and inherited economic structure are incompatible with a fully developed market economy and hinder democratization and the development of the rule of law. Russia's expansion was largely based on economically irrational criteria and military objectives. The Russian disease, a misdevelopment of industrialization, has produced production facilities and entire cities that are not sustainable and would need to be shut down. The author suggests that climate change could possibly force a natural resettlement and depopulation of Siberia, leading to a Europeanization of a shrunken, post-imperial Russia.
