- Abstract
The book by Liam Mac Mathúna titled "The Ó Neachtain window on Gaelic Dublin, 1700–1750" explores the Ó Neachtain circle of writers, intellectuals, and scribes who lived in Dublin in the early 18th century. It focuses on the lives and works of Seán and Tadhg Ó Neachtain and analyzes a list of death notices published by Tadhg from 1715 onwards. The book also examines the Ó Neachtain family and friendship networks, as well as their relationships with the clergy. It provides a comprehensive insight into the relationships and scholarly collaboration within the Ó Neachtain circle, shedding light on the role of Seán and Tadhg Ó Neachtain in continuing the Gaelic literary tradition in a modern urban context. Their autograph manuscripts and original compositions are discussed, as well as the role of the Ó Neachtain circle in dealing with the Book of Ballymote and its influence on contemporary Gaelic scholarship. The text offers an insight into the religious, political, cultural, and sociolinguistic environment of Seán and Tadhg Ó Neachtain, and their significant literary legacy.
