- Abstract
The Demir Kapija epicentral area, located in the southeastern part of the Vardar seismic zone, is one of the most clearly differentiated seismic zone in the Balkans according to its basic elements of geological structure and seismic activity. The seismic activity of this epicentral area is a part of the seismic activity of the Vardar seismic zone, related to the displacements along the fault structures formed or reactivated in neotectonics period. The continuous monitoring of the seismicity of the Demir Kapija epicentral area starts from 1957, where according to the results of the study of seismicity, it defines it in the group of epicenter areas with moderate seismic activity characterized by the occurrence of weak autochthonous earthquakes with magnitude ML<4.0.Seismological and seismotectonic research for the considered period, 1960-2019, enabled determination of a representative fault, along which the largest number of epicenters of the examined earthquakes are distributed, and the strongest is the one from 28.09.1985, with local Richter magnitude ML=5.3. The obtained results from the performed seismicity research are expected to be a solid basis in the researches of the modern and the expected seismicity in the epicenter area Demir Kapija.
