- Abstract
Modern science still finds it difficult to define life as a phenomenon, since it is a process, not an isolated material substance. In the absence of a universal definition of life, it is defined descriptively as a property of organisms in which all or most of the following phenomena occur: organization; homeostasis; metabolism; growth; adaptation; reactions/responses to impacts and reproduction. The reproduction is considered as an opportunity to form new organisms from parental organisms. The system theory, in turn, defines the living beings as selforganizing and self-creating objects. An alternative to this definition is the concept of multi-agent systems capable of self-reproduction. The common in all aspects is the ability of the living organisms to exchange substances and energy with the environment and to reproduce. There are also deviations from this norm where, for various reasons, the ability to produce offspring is limited or completely missing. This phenomenon, known as infertility, is inherent in all living organisms - from the unicellular to the human. It accompanies the people throughout their historical development, treating mainly in demographically. On the other hand, it is a problem that has serious socio-economic and socio-psychological consequences that have had different interpretations and solutions over the centuries. The successful realization of parental functions is the basis of the reproductive health of the population, while the inability to become pregnant and to deliver a healthy viable fetus are manifestations of infertility. Until recently, the only option for compensation of this problem was the adoption. The active development of the science and the progress of the medicine in recent years have increased the chances of persons with reproductive disorders by entering alternative maternity options. One is surrogate motherhood or surrogacy, which undoubtedly represents a major advance in scientific and practical terms, but on the other hand it raises many questions related to the biological, medical, moral, economic, legal, and social aspects of this problem. The progress in the medicine cannot and should not be stopped, but its high importance necessitates the introduction of a serious regulatory framework to control it. Infertility is a common problem today, which is why the topic of surrogacy is becoming increasingly important. In this regard, this paper examines the current aspects and opportunities of surrogacy and the attitudes of the people.
