The Planning for Experimental City.
- Authors
Prescott, James R.
- Abstract
The Minnesota Experimental City (MXC) is one of the most exciting urban enterprises of this time and should have important implications for other efforts at resettlement. The planning for MXC may be summarily characterized as large in scale and comprehensive in nature, in addition, the city is to possess an environment within which alternative urban technologies can be tested. The interaction between rapid development and experimentation underlies most problems discussed in this article. The planning for the new city is in initial stages so the discussion is necessarily general. Numerous seminars were organized and held during the winter of 1967-68 comprising representatives from academic, business and governmental organizations. The reports from these seminars will form the basis for further research on design and planning of the city. This article summarizes some salient features of sessions devoted to the economic impact of MXC. The principal feature of the city's development is its rapidity and scale. Initial objectives suggest a 10-15 year planning horizon for a population of 250,000, implying average annual growth rates of 6-10%.
