- Abstract
Belief in the 'evil eye' (an drochshúil / an tsúil mhillte, malocchio, jettature) is common to many countries around the globe. It is variously perceived as being caused by envy, as a means of coping with circumscribed circumstances, or as a way of regulating unbridled greed in societies where there is an inequitable division of profit. It is an intriguing concept, being adapted by individuals and societies to particular settings and contexts, all the while maintaining certain common characteristics both historically and geographically. This article comprises an initial examination of the symptoms and signs of the effects of the evil eye in countries where this belief has been documented, from the circum-Mediterranean region to the Americas, to establish certain similarities and differences that may be noted in reports of the phenomenon across time and space. It also seeks to examine how the physical effects of the evil eye on any given individual might be perceived in a biomedical clinical setting today, pointing the way for future research.
