- Abstract
The article presents findings of a study which examines the condition of the threatened Elkhorn coral Acropora palmata in Rincon, Puerto Rico. It states that 20 aquarium professionals and researchers from the U.S. and Europe have collected gametes of the endangered Elkhorn coral Acropora palmata during a SECORE workshop in Trés Palmas Reserve. According to the study, over 900,000 larvae were raised in collected eggs fertilized in vitro wherein half of them were taken back in participating public aquaria. Furthermore, the study suggests that public aquaria and zoological gardens have played important roles in the conservation of endangered Elkhorn coral.
