- Abstract
The 2023 emergency medicine match saw a significant number of unfilled positions, indicating a decline in interest in the specialty. This decline can be attributed to various factors, including workforce projections, increased clinical demands, burnout, economic challenges, and changes in healthcare reimbursement. The decrease in applications to emergency medicine residency programs has also contributed to the surplus of emergency physicians projected for the future. These trends have implications for the entire healthcare system, as emergency medicine plays a crucial role in providing care to underserved populations. Efforts are being made to address these issues and support the practice of emergency medicine, including proposals to ensure educational needs and patient care are prioritized, addressing boarding and burnout, and advocating for better working conditions. By improving the practice of emergency medicine, the quality of patient care and the healthcare system as a whole can be enhanced.
