- Abstract
Veterinarian-client communication is evolving from a paternalistic approach towards a client-centered or relationship-centered pattern, in which owners want to be heard and to take part in the decisionmaking process. Shared decision making is the process in which the veterinarian and client collaborate to make decisions about the further medical approach. Shared decision making is applied if several equivalent options are available for further diagnostics or treatment. The process consists of three parts. In the first step (choice or team talk), the veterinarian indicates that several options are available and a decision must be made. The initial preference of the owner is gauged. In the second step (option talk), the advantages and disadvantages of all options are discussed. In the final step (decision talk), the preference, values and beliefs of the owner are integrated into a final joint decision. This requires excellent communication skills, with open-ended questions, active listening and empathy.
