- Title
Opinion: Embracing 'anthropogenic' over 'artificial' light at night.
- Authors
Durmus, Dorukalp
- Abstract
The article argues for a shift in terminology from "artificial light at night" (ALAN) to "anthropogenic light at night" (ALAN) in order to more accurately convey the human influence on nighttime illumination and its environmental consequences. The term "artificial lighting" is seen as inadequate in capturing the broader implications of human-made light. Embracing the term "anthropogenic" reflects a commitment to precise scientific communication and a recognition of our responsibility for the consequences of nighttime lighting. The adoption of this terminology is seen as a meaningful step towards a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by nighttime illumination and a more informed and responsible coexistence with the nocturnal environment.
