- Abstract
This paper analyzes food poverty in Argentina between 2014 and 2021. About 17.6 million people in the country experienced food poverty in 2021. This shows how far the country is from achieving Goal 2.1 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: "End Hunger and ensure access by all people, ... to safe, nutritious and sufficient food for all the year round". This paper asks about the relationship between certain factors that characterize households and their members, and food poverty. It also inquires about which of them were related to the changes occurred in food poverty in Argentina, which increased from 16.3% of the population in 2014 to 38.4% in 2021. The results reveal a clear association between food poverty and income distribution, especially when looking at recent changes including the economic recession of 2020. Combining this information with some of the other conclusions that emerge from the paper, it is clear that social policy can be an effective tool to achieve progress towards the goal of zero hunger.
