- Abstract
During the 17th Century, there was an increasing demand for higher education in New Spain. With the growth of the cities and Spanish villas, new generations of young people sought an education as a path to upward mobility. At the same time, non-Spanish families who nevertheless had the ability to pay for the education of their children also made their appearance in the Royal University of Mexico. This article studies the extent to which university degrees were a factor in the upward mobility of alumni, as well as examining the support or limits offered by society to the lower estates and disadvantaged social groups when studying and beginning a career in the public sector.
