- Abstract
The article "Echoes in East and West" reviews the book "This Side of the Wall. A New History of the GDR 1949-1990" by Katja Hoyer and Dirk Oschmann. The book received an ambivalent reaction in Germany and personal attacks against the author. Hoyer considers the GDR not only geographically, but also methodologically "beyond" the wall and questions the common perception of the GDR. She shows everyday life in the GDR from the perspective of East Germans and emphasizes the social question and social mobility in the GDR compared to the Federal Republic. In his book "The East: A West German Invention," author Oschmann raises the question of memory and criticizes the ongoing dissatisfaction of East Germans and their treatment after reunification.
