- Abstract
Objective: Investigate the food consumption of adolescents from the state of Maranhão, Brazil, emphasizing regional food consumption. Methods: This is a descriptive study with data from a population-based research conducted in 2007/2008 in the state of Maranhão with a sample of 1,399 adolescents, who were demographically and nutritionally investigated and diagnosed by body mass index using criteria of the World Health Organization (2007). The consumption was evaluated through a Food Frequency Questionnaire (validated to guarantee the inclusion of regional food). Results: Most adolescents had low income (minimum wage or less - 42.5%). It was found 12% of overweight on the population, 4.6% underweight, and 4.2% obesity. The food types most consumed daily by adolescents were coffee (82.3%), rice (77.2%), margarine and butter (50.8%), beans (50.6%), cassava flour (47.3%) and bread (40.1%). Fruits, vegetables, meats and eggs, and dairy products had low frequency of daily consumption as well as foods that are usually preferred by teenagers, such as sugar, other sweets and fast food. It was also reported low consumption of regional food of the fruit group (such as bacuri, cupuaçu, juçara), the vegetable group (such as vinagreira, cuxá), the cereal group (such as the cassava bread/beiju) and the meat group (crab). Conclusion: Food consumption of adolescents in the state of Maranhão is considered monotonous, with lack of nutrients, possibly due to the low income of the population; therefore intervention needs to be adopted to expand consumption of regional foods rich in nutrients, to avoid jeopardizing the health of these individuals.
