- Abstract
Italian Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, a former adviser to Pope Francis, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail for financial crimes, including embezzlement and abuse of office. The case centered around the development of a London investment property that cost the Vatican Secretariat of State €350 million. Other defendants involved in the case received sentences ranging from four to seven-and-a-half years. The defense raised concerns about a lack of due process and the absence of respect for human rights in the proceedings.
