- Abstract
The article discusses a study which investigated variations in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) treatment practices for older adults across regions with differing end-of-life intensity of care. The retrospective observational study involved analyzing a cohort of 41,420 adults, aged 65 years or older, who underwent long-term dialysis or received a kidney transplant between June 1, 2005 and May 31, 2006. The authors observed the existence of significant regional differences in treatment practices for ESRD in older adults unexplained by differences in patient characteristics.
