- Abstract
The article discusses efforts by both professional organizations and governmental agencies to balance pain management amidst increasing concern over injury an death associated with use of opioid pain medications. These efforts reflected in various guidelines, requirements and recommendations issued by the American Pain Society, the American Academy of Pain Management, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and others are considered. The risk associated with long-acting opioid drugs is assessed.
