- Title
Hijacked Organic, Limited Local, Faulty Fair Trade: What's a Radical to Eat?
- Authors
ENGLER, MARK
- Abstract
The article focuses on the highjack of the organic farming by big business and the criticism to organic, local, and fair trade. According to the Organic Trade Association, the sales of organic food and beverages in the U.S. have increased from $1 billion in 1990 to $26.7 billion in 2010. It adds that the aims of critics of organic, local, and fair trade include the reduction of pesticide use, better wages for farmers, and sustainable farming practice. Moreover, the consideration of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over the life cycle of a food product was argued by critics instead of focusing only on transporting food to market.
