- Abstract
This article focuses on the impact of reports that H5N1 avian influenza had been detected in poultry in Africa and elsewhere. As of mid-February 2006, the virus had been detected on farms in three states in Nigeria and news reports revealed suspected cases in five other states. World Health Organization Director-General Jong-Wook Lee cautioned Africans about the impact of exposure to avian influenza for the many people already immunocompromised due to HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and other infections.
