- Abstract
The article discusses the painting "Children Playing Cards," by Dutch artist Dirck Hals (1591-1656). Biographical information is given for brothers Frans and Dirck Hals, sons of a Flemish textile worker who fled with his family to northern Netherlands during the Spanish invasion of Antwerp. The brothers' artistic styles are mentioned. The draftsmanship of Dirck's painting is described as simple and elegant. The diagonal and perpendicular lines in the oil-on-panel painting are explained, as well as the activity of the children and the muted colors in their clothing.
