- Abstract
Finding eco-friendly, sustainable, and alternative materials for plastic products is an effective way to solve the plastic pollution problem. In this study, inspired by the exquisitely ordered "Brick-and-mortar" structure and excellent multi-layered interface of freshwater mussel (Cristaria plicata), we have used a simple and effective "bottom-up" method to make a montmorillonite(Mt)-based composite material. The material of montmorillonite/chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol has Cristaria plicata's nacre architecture properties by self-assembly and low-temperature lamination process. The unique construction method of this composite material provides it a nacre structure and excellent properties. The constructed material has a high flexural strength of 235 MPa, fracture toughness of 2.2 MPa m1/2, good fire resistance, and puncture resistance. Therefore, this bionic mussel composite has great potential for applications in engineering as a substitute for plastic.
