- Abstract
This document provides a summary of recent articles from the Annals of Internal Medicine. The first article discusses the use of next-generation antibiotics in treating highly resistant gram-negative infections in U.S. hospitals. The study found that newer antibiotics were used in 58.8% of these infections, while traditional antibiotics were used in 79.3% of cases with suboptimal efficacy or safety profiles. The second article examines the association of physician and patient sex with hospital admission-related outcomes. Female patients had decreased mortality and readmission rates when treated by a female physician. The third article is a systematic review and meta-analysis of pharmacologic treatments for adults with type 2 diabetes. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) agonists were found to reduce mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events, heart failure hospitalizations, and the progression of chronic kidney disease. The fourth article discusses the use of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTnI) in guiding care for suspected acute coronary syndrome. The study found that the use of hs-cTnI did not lead to differences in rates of myocardial infarction or all-cause mortality at 5 years. The fifth article is a subgroup analysis of a trial on bempedoic acid for preventing cardiovascular events in statin-intolerant adults with diabetes. Bempedoic acid was found to reduce the risk for major adverse cardiovascular events without increasing
