- Title
Cayenne Tick Responsible for Equine Piroplasmosis in Horses.
- Authors
Durham, Sharon
- Abstract
The article reports on sporadic cases of equine piroplasmosis (EP), a tick-borne disease of horses. The largest outbreak of this disease was discovered in Kleberg County, Texas in October 2009. The clinical signs of EP, which can lead to death, are poor appetite and weight loss. In the U.S., dermacentor variabilis and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus are the only two tick species that have been shown experimentally to be carriers of Theileria equi.
