- Abstract
This article addresses the emotional grammars provoked by experiences of submission to authority. It adopts the theoretical perspective of interactionist sociology, particularly the relation between power, status, and authority and the emergence of specific feelings discussed by Theodore Kemper and the analysis of shame set forth by Thomas Scheff. It analyzes baggage screening at airports, understood as an "interactional scenario", using the methodology of in-depth interviews with citizens of Rio de Janeiro who have undergone that experience. It discusses the feelings of shame and humiliation narrated by the interviewees and seeks to relate them to macro-level conceptual matrixes aimed at interpreting the place of the law in Brazilian society.
